| The Print Market Workshop was commissioned in 2003 to
produce a work that would located in the entrance hall for the 'Old
Library' building in Cardiff City centre. The piece would be the main
focal point for many of the events that took place within the building.
– Home for the Welsh 2008 bid. Large scale prints, circles measuring
8ft in diameter were combined with text and paintings to cover this
area, two hand made screens within the foyer were also made on which
a whole range of printed matter was applied.
During this commission a small anti room was used to develop the
work. The idea was that the visiting general public could witness
the work being made and see it develop over a period of time. The
commissioning board and artists Lou Thornton and Pete Williams decided
to produce an evolving work that would involve the general public’s
own interaction and contributions.
A small room adjacent to the foyer (previously the shop) was stripped
out and painted white. Then in neat and ordered rows 20 x 1000 +
8 = 2008. The half-inch nails were nailed into the wall then 2008
small bulldog clips attached. Then on each clip hung a small re-seable
plastic bag containing a different object each month. The public
were invited to contribute an object / memorabilia that would fit
into the bags e.g. April – something Red. May – 'Fingerprints'
- June – ' Signatures’ July – Holiday snaps' August
– ' Tickets’?
Movable drop points were made a positioned around Cardiff. The project
was entitled, 'Collect 2008' and has helped inspire similar projects
since.
