Editions 3/3 is a contemporary print making exhibition
showing the work of three artists who have transferred their traditional
printmaking skills into new areas, including computer generated
imagery, sculpture and painting.
Works on display include Chris Nurse’s paintings of nativity
scenes made of biscuits, vegetables, paper cut outs, knitting, plasticine
and Christmas ornaments, Steve Hyslop’s four-poster bed and
Arnold Nisbet’s computer generated imagery.
Arnold Nisbet completed his MA in Printmaking in 1991 but has since
become more interested in film and computer generated imagery: “The
moving image, the printed image, photography and screen graphics
have all been dramatically affected by the microchip and the software
that operates with it. We are still at the early stages of a visual
revolution. The possibilities are limitless. That’s exciting.
But, with so many image-making tools to work with the hardest thing
to process are ideas. There are infinite ways to communicate and
we are so easily seduced by the surface. These challenges are very
exciting”.
Christopher Nurse RCA has used printmaking throughout his artistic
career but now creates paintings that look at the humorous or bizarre
relationships between objects and the contexts in which they might
be found: “There is often an intriguing gap between the ideas
we hold in our heads and the reality we find. Religious kitsch,
childhood representations, craft objects are good examples some
of which hold equal amounts of attraction and repulsion”.
Steven Hyslop began making woodcuts of landscapes in 1988 whilst
studying for a BA in Fine Art Printmaking at Cheltenham College
of Art. However, he now uses his woodcutting skills to make large
scale furniture from local timber, which he has usually felled and
seasoned.
This show is the third of a series of five shows organised by Pete
Williams and Lou Thornton of the Print Market Workshop in partnership
with CBAT Gallery. The Print Market Workshop is a fine art print
workshop specialising in environmentally friendly printmaking and
runs workshops and educational insets for artists and teachers.
It is situated at Chapter Arts Centre in Canton but the show is
at CBAT Gallery in Cardiff Bay.
