| An exhibition of predominantly still life by the figurative
painter Nicholas Charles Williams
The exhibition will represent the first presentation of Williams'
work in Wales. In contrast to some of the huge canvases that Williams
has made in recent years this exhibition concentrates on a series
of relatively small and carefully considered still life.
Also featured in the exhibition are two observational paintings
of chandeliers, painted by 'eye alone'. They were made for scientific
research into David Hockney's controversial optics theory. Dr D
Stork chief scientist of Ricoh California asked Williams to paint
a chandelier by eye to the approximate scale of the one depicted
in Jan van Eyck's 'Portrait of Arnolfini and his Wife' (National
Gallery). Dr Stork and his colleague Antonio Criminisi of Microsoft,
Cambridge, applied analysis to the chandeliers providing comprehensive
evidence that refutes David Hockney's claim that certain old masters
had traced their compositions using optical projections. The research
lead to pioneering ways of exploring and understanding the spatial
characteristics within Renaissance paintings.
Williams has earned a reputation as one of Britain's foremost realist
painters. His approach to observational painting is no less rigorous
than other British realists before him such as Meredith Frampton,
Euan Uglow and Lucian Freud but Williams' naturalism is often combined
with a symbolic subtext. At the centre of his work is a fascination
with human behaviour, its drives and forces.
This show is jointly organised by Pete Williams of the Print Market
